Meditations

Marcus Aurelius's private notebook — Stoicism applied, page by page, by an emperor to the weight of his own life.

stoicism

Marcus wrote the Meditations to himself, in Greek, probably on campaign. He never intended publication. What survives is the most intimate record of a serious person working out how to live.

The recurring themes: accept what is not in your power; act from virtue; remember you will die; do not waste this moment on petty grievances. The book is compact enough to read in a weekend and large enough to reread for decades.
