The Platform Sutra records Huineng‘s life story and teaching — most famously the verse contest by which he received the transmission and his sermons to the assembled sangha. It founds the Southern School of Zen and articulates the doctrine of sudden awakening: buddha-nature is not gradually developed but suddenly recognized.
Its inclusion in the canon as a “sutra” — a term reserved for the Buddha’s own teachings — reflects the Chinese tradition’s unprecedented evaluation of Huineng as a direct inheritor of the Buddha’s awakening.
